How much does EV charger installation cost?
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Level 2 charger circuit, 40 to 60 amps | $1,200 to $2,800 |
| 200 amp panel upgrade, only if the load calculation calls for it | $5,500 to $11,500 |
Before permit and utility fees. Prices updated October 2026.
What moves the price
- Panel-to-parking distance, and attic or finished walls in the way
- Amperage: 40 amp circuit for most, 60 amps for 48 amp charging
- Panel space, or load management or an upgrade instead
- Hardwired charger or a 14-50 outlet
- Permit fees, which vary by city
Permits for EV chargers
Most cities require a permit and inspection for an EV charger circuit, and the fee goes on your quote. The utility stays out of it. Rebates come and go, so check your utility or ask us.

EV charger questions
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Often not. Load management lets many 100 and 125 amp homes skip it.
Hardwired or plug-in EV charger?
Hardwired is cleaner and a must for 48 amps. Plug-ins move with you.
Are there EV charger rebates?
Sometimes. PG&E, SMUD and Roseville Electric have offered them. Ask when we quote.
Do you charge for the quote?
No. An electrician looks at the job in person and quotes it, free.
