Subpanels

A subpanel puts breakers where you need them: garage, shop, ADU or kitchen.

Signs your panel or wiring needs attention

  • Main panel has no open slots
  • Wiring a garage, shop or ADU
  • A remodel needing several new circuits
  • Long runs to the main are driving up cost

How the job goes, start to finish

  1. Size feeder and subpanel to the loads
  2. Run the feeder, mount the panel
  3. Keep neutrals and grounds on separate bars
  4. Label, inspect, hand it over

What moves the price

  • Amperage: same as now, 200 amps, or 400 amps
  • Separate meter and main, or a combined unit
  • Utility rules for the mast, meter socket and service entrance
  • How many circuits move or extend to the new panel
  • Grounding, bonding and surge protection up to current code
  • City permit fees, which vary

Permits for panel and wiring work

Panel and service work needs a permit and a city or county inspection. Meter work also needs a utility disconnect, on the utility's schedule and fees. Each fee is listed separately.

Panel and wiring questions

Can I add a subpanel instead of upgrading my panel?

Sometimes, if your service has capacity. A load calculation decides.

Where can a subpanel go?

Anywhere with the required clear working space in front. Not in a closet or bathroom.

Do you charge for the quote?

No. An electrician looks at the job in person and quotes it, free.
