Buzzing Panel
A faint hum is normal. Buzzing or crackling means a loose connection or failing breaker.
Signs it's more than a fluke
- Buzz changes when big loads kick on
- A breaker that buzzes and runs warm
- Crackling or popping inside the panel
- Buzzing, with flickering lights
What we do when we get there
- Find the hot spot with a scan
- Torque breakers and lugs to manufacturer spec
- Replace the bad breaker or bus connection
- Suggest a new panel only if the bus is damaged
What moves the price
- One device, or wiring inside the walls
- Access: attic, crawlspace, or drywall to open and patch
- Age and type of your wiring and panel
- Whether a permit is required
- Parts: same-for-same, or upgraded to current code
Permits for repair work
Like-for-like repairs usually skip permits. Panel swaps, new circuits and inspection fixes usually need one.
